The Museum
The Museum
of Mourning Photography & Memorial Practice (MoMP) was founded by Anthony R. Vizzari and is operated by A&A
Studios, Inc. ( www.AnchorAnvil.Com ) MoMP owns and protects over 1000 mourning photographs and negatives, circa 1840 to
present. With a modest budget, the Museum actively acquires new items on an ongoing basis. In addition to photography, there
is also an archive of pertinent literature and memorial ephemera. It is the goal of the Museum to keep this type of photography
accessible to the public.
The Museum
Collection is located in Chicago's Ukranian Village neighborhood. At
this time, the collection may only be viewed by appointment. Due to the high volume of visitation
requests and limited space, 2-3 week advance scheduling may be necessary. Please plan accordingly. Admittance is free,
but domations are encouraged. To make arrangements to visit the collection, please email: viewing@mourningphoto.com.
At this
time, less than 10% of the Museum’s Collection is available online. To see selections from MoMP’s holdings,
Visit the Gallery. We are working on making the entire collection available online, so check back
often for Gallery and website updates.
The Digital Archive Project
MoMP’s
Digital Archive Project was created to help educate the public on the practice of memorial photography, both past and present.
This FREE archive is intended to aid collectors, historians and anthropologists with their research on the subject. Included
in the archive are images from public and private collections throughout the world. At this time, no such FREE public
database dedicated to memorial photography exists. The images in this digital archive have been submitted by users of mourningphoto.com
and friends of MoMP. If you would like to participate in this project, by contributing your images to the digital archive,
please contact us. All copyrights remain with their respective owners and all images included in our database are watermarked.
